momo questions answered!

day 32:

i'm going to try and not bore you guys since i don't have too much info for you from today. both last night and this mornings NST looked great and same as always. very thankful. i'll go for another ultrasound to check cords tomorrow morning and then will have my growth ultrasound on monday. really looking forward to that and praying they're about 3 lbs each!

after i got done with my morning NST i got a ton of awesome visitors! my mom, bendel, simms, my bff hallie (who brought me a much craved vanilla milkshake! xoxoxo thanks hal), haley, margaret burgin, and amanda shaver! it was definitely a party today! haha. maragaret and amanda brought a bunch of little gifts for the boys and me..so so sweet and thoughtful. but one of the coolest things they brought was some hand tied flies that amanda's husband, ross, tied! cannot wait to get on the river and use them, even if its a little while off. something to look forward to for sure. simms had fun with all his new girlfriends…

after everyone left it was almost 3 or so.  i get my vitals and the babies'  heart rates checked at 4. the resident doctor comes by at 5 to talk about how good everything still looks. cal comes up around 6:30-7ish. somewhere in there i try to get the blog done if i am not too tired. after cal and i eat dinner its time to get back on the monitors! people often ask what i do with my time, but i really don't have much free time. its strange. so since there isn't much news to report today (thankfully!) i thought i would answer some other questions people often ask:

what kind of twins do you have?

i have mono/mono twins (shortened and called momo). they are the second rarest of twin pregnancies, second to conjoined. they are 1% of twin pregnancies and occur 1 in 60,000. they are not genetic and cannot run in families. they happen when the egg fertilizes the sperm and the egg splits late, in fact, if it had split a couple days later they WOULD have been conjoined twins. they are so rare because they share a placenta AND a sac. this makes them very high risk because they get their cords all tangled and knotted together… often they come out like this:

why are the babies delivered so early?

the way doc hennessey explained it to me is that after 32 weeks there is really no gain in them staying inside. they are safer outside than they are inside. they try to get mono mono moms to 32 weeks because this greatly reduces NICU time. plus, after 32 weeks the risk of mortality inside me goes up with each day.

will you have a csection?

unfortunately yes. i had such an easy vaginal birth with simms and am afraid of doing something so different, but its whats happening! vaginal births are a terrible idea with mono mono twins because of the cord knots. once would come out it would likely compress the cord of the one not yet delivered. i have never heard of a successful vaginal delivery of mono mono twins.

how long will they be in the nicu?

of course every baby is different and there is no way to know how long they will be there, they tell us to expect them to stay until around their due date (december 16.) they will get to go home as soon as they can suck, swallow, breathe, feed, and maintain their own body temperatures. of course we hope that my steroid shots will help tremendously with their breathing but they are still going to be "whimpy white boys." (white males have been shown to be the slowest at doing all the things needed to go home)

are we ready for the boys at home?

no no and no. haha! once we found out the twins were coming we put our house on the market and it sold very quickly. we are now living with my mom while we begin to build a house (yes we are insane.) we haven't broken ground yet or anything and are still waiting on our construction loan, but the house should be done 4-5 months after its started. so, all that to say. they don't have a nursery or anything. even if we could have stayed in our house, i am not sure we would be anymore prepared though. this pregnancy has such a high rate of mortality (50%) that i am just now feeling more comfortable about buying them things. luckily i don't need a tremendous amount since i just had a baby boy last year. we need to get their carseats and this hilarious stroller (which is actually amazing because the twins can go in it as newborns and lay down so i don't have to lug around 2 carseats + simms, and it will continue to work as they grow) and a couple other things..but thankfully we don't need too much.

i am pretty sure thats the most commonly asked questions but if y'all have more send them my way!
